Paper Summary:
This paper attempts to explain social problems in the context of the American workplace. It looks at how processes such as ownership, control, administration and organization influence social trends and changes, which thereby contribute to major social problems. The paper contends that the capitalist economic system is the basis of workplace processes and briefly discusses the nature of capitalism.
From the Paper:
"The biggest barrier to equal opportunities for women in the workplace is that of conflict between work and home responsibilities. Many women are not offered paid time off or are not guaranteed their job after the standard six weeks of maternity leave. Six weeks is a very short time to heal and care for a newborn baby, but many women are forced to return to work this early for fear of losing their jobs or simply not being able to pay the bills. Furthermore, companies do not usually provide daycare facilities or compensation for childcare costs. This results in women taking time out of their careers to stay home with children, or children being put in daycare too early and for too long. Studies have shown that daycare can be beneficial to children after the age of two, but separation from the mother before this age can be detrimental to a child's physical and emotional development.
