Paper Summary:
This essay takes a look at the increasing amount of violence in the school systems. It categorizes the types of violence that is taking place and also gives explanations for such behavior. It also suggests ways to curb the violent trend.
From the Paper:
"When a school-aged child comes home from school, he/she generally sits down and watches television or plays a video game. Most television shows, as well as video games, have a lot of graphic violence in them to keep kids interested. For example, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is a television show that is geared towards young boys. Over the years it has changed from minimal street fighting for the purpose of putting the "bad guy" into jail to a great deal of violent fighting to kill the "bad guy." Also, recently, the normal family has gone from at least one stay at home or part time parent to both parents working full time or more. These parents sometimes rely on violent television shows and games to, in a way, baby-sit their children until they get home. Along with all of the violence they are exposed to, some children even see violence in their own home. Violent children, "...often have histories of abuse and neglect" (Shafii). With violence all around them everyday, it is no wonder why violence is increasing in school systems in America. With kids getting into fights at younger ages, and an increase in fist-fighting and weapon usage at school, violence is becoming a major problem in America's school systems."
