Schizophrenia: Symptoms and Treatment

# 138277
A look at the symptoms and treatment of schizophrenia.
1,500 words (approx. 6 pages) | 10 sources | APA | 2008 | United States
Published on: Jan 01, 2008

Paper Summary:

The paper relates that, according to Beebe, (2003) "schizophrenia is considered the most chronic and disabling of the severe mental disorders" (p. 67). The paper further relates that Bemak and Epp (2002) state that patients with schizophrenia experience "continuous mental activity" that is not painful but that is a "source of anguish" (p. 14), because schizophrenia "literally means 'split mind'", or a "division of psychological processes" (Bemak & Epp, 2002, p. 14). The paper describes how Bemak and Epp (2002) contend that living with schizophrenia for the patient is the equivalent to "living in a nightmare" in which no one can be trusted and nothing has certainty (p. 14). The paper also discusses how Stein and Wemmerus (2001) state that individuals that are affected by schizophrenia no longer can fulfill the roles that they were intended to play within their families, in relationships or within society (p. 725).
