"First coined by a French ethnographer, the term rite of passage' refers to a ritual that is engaged in to mark a significant change in a person's sexual or social status. (Macionis) Some important and well known rituals include weddings marking a change in marital status, the barmitzvah, the high school graduation, the funeral marking death and so forth.
