This paper reviews Michael A. Porter's "Five Forces" Analysis, a holistic methodology formulated for direct application in a business environment.
2,620 words (approx. 10.5 pages) | 3 sources | APA | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper explains that the main objective of this analysis framework developed by Porter is to help managers analyze whole industries in terms of environments and competition. The author points out that Porter's system is more of a symbiotic relationship between variables than a hierarchy; therefore, there is not any real proscribed or particular order in which one must address each of the five forces. The paper summarizes each of the forces and presents examples of how each element operates within individual industries.

From the Paper:

"Some more entry barriers proposed by Porter are access to distribution channels and scale-independent cost disadvantages. In the first barrier, the new entry into an industry is limited by their inability to fulfill their distribution needs and reach the customer effectively. This was primarily what, before deregulation, kept many viable competitors from coming into the telecommunications industry in the U.S.: they could
enter the market, but then they found that the distribution access or phone lines and cables were all controlled by companies already established there. Deregulation required these established companies to offer open access to these channels instead of charging competitors or denying them access, and thus eliminated this entry barrier."
