↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The paper explains political socialization to be the process by which people acquire their political views, attitudes and beliefs. The paper looks at the research that shows how the political socialization process begins at an early age with parents and close family members as one of the most important forces, but external factors like the mainstream media and peers gain increasing influence as people grow and mature. The paper then looks at how the 2008 presidential election will likely influence the political socialization process of three hundred million Americans, young and old alike.

From the Paper:

"The study of political socialization is a relatively new discipline, and relevant studies only first emerged during the late 1950s as part of a larger transformation in political science research to refocus on political behavior based on an increasing realization that political behavior was learned behavior (Niemi and Hepburn 7). Over the years, this refocused attention has provided political scientists with some new insights into how people become politically socialized throughout their lives. According to Ichilov (2004), although the family and especially parents represent the most powerful socialization forces for very young children, there are numerous influences that also play a role in the political socialization process, particularly as people grow older."
