The paper discusses the different upgrades, editions and versions of the Perl computer programming language. The source of the name 'Perl', the language's features, syntax and the program's execution into two phases are explained. The paper also points out that the code has been optimized for performance at the cost of simplicity, clearness and strong inner interfaces. The paper relates, however, that all versions of Perl do automatic data typing and memory management, which is one of the reasons that this would be the author's personal choice as a dynamic programming language.

"The computer programming language Perl is a dynamic language that was created and released by Larry Wall in 1987. There are features that have been borrowed from a number of other languages including AWK, sed, shell scripting (sh), C, and Lisp (Ashton, 1999). The basic structure of the language is based on the brace-delimited block style of C and AWK. It was used mainly because of its strengths related to text processing and the lack of arbitrary limitations found in many of the languages for scripting that were available at the time it was introduced. Wall began to work on the language the same year that it was released while he worked as a programmer for Unisys; version 1.0 was released to a newsgroup called comp.sources.misc on December 18 of the same year (Wall, 1988)."
