From the Paper:

"According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become weak and more prone to break (undated). Literally, it means porous bones, and is characterized by low bone mass and by a deterioration of bone tissue. Bone leads to fragile bones and increased susceptibility to fractures.
"If left untreated or not prevented, the disease could progress silently until it fractures, typically in the wrist, hip, or spine (National Osteoporosis Foundation, undated).
"The Surgeon General estimates that by 2020, 50% of all Americans above 50 years old will have weak bones, if trends in diet and lifestyle continue. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2004, p. 3)"
