The paper relates the attitudes of Michel Faber towards the Victorian period, Darwin and vegetarianism. The paper discusses how Faber will one day be remembered for realistically portraying the Victorian era, his ability to keep the reader interested, even when the plot does not seem to be very exciting, for telling his stories and for commenting on certain shortcomings in society through symbolism and metaphor.
From the Paper:
"Michel Faber was born in the Netherlands in 1960. When his family moved to Australia, when Faber was 7-year old, he was able to come into contact with a new language and, with it, a new culture. He now resides in Ross-Shire, in the Scottish Highlands, where he continues to write. Faber is a very decorated author who has won many awards during his career for both his short stories and his novels. His first collection of short stories, entitled Some Rain Must Fall, was awarded the Saltire First Book of the Year Award in 1999. One of his most famous novels, Under The Skin, made the shortlist for the Whitbread First Novel Award in 2000, but it came up just short. Some other famous literary works by Faber include The Courage of Consort and the Crimson Petal and the White which have not won any major awards, but remain very important works just the same."
