1,867 words (approx. 7.5 pages) | 7 sources | MLA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper examines the mistaken assumption that little progress was made in the sciences during the Medieval era. It specifically discusses techniques of healing and common medical interventions that were used during that time period. The paper shows how the Medieval period of medicine wass a period of great transition, from the arcane to the modern. The paper contains copies of original sources.

From the Paper:

"Medieval medicine was truly not a dark practice of seedy solutions to unknown and superstitious problems. It was the transition between the unknown and the demand for knowing and understanding, which mark later periods of medical practice. Medieval medicine was in fact the basis for much of the scientific medical development of the Renaissance and even "science" in general as it was frequently the core of the educational system, from which other educational vocations sprang. Medical treatments in the medieval period may seem crude by comparison to some modern ideals of medicine and yet they create a basic for an understanding of the body as a functioning physical system that is affected in many ways that are completely secondary to belief."
