This paper examines how liberalism as an ideology has a long and complex history in both politics and philosophy. It looks at how the liberal tradition refers to a system of thought or ideology which emphasizes the concept of freedom and personal liberty as the central purpose of government. It shows that while there are a number of different viewpoints on how this should be achieved in liberal thought, the central impetus in this ideology is towards the best balance between freedom and political order.
