Learning Approaches

Paper Summary:

This paper explains that project-based learning is a set of structured but flexible teaching strategies, which enable teachers to guide children through real world studies with the goal of developing a product or creation. The paper then points out that problem-based learning is an approach, which focuses on the process of solving problems by applying knowledge from multiple disciplines to acquire a solution. The paper further relates that inquiry-based learning is student-centered and focuses on questioning, critical thinking and problem-solving. Additionally, the paper discusses two articles associated with these different approaches.

"One article, "Science Education and Urban Youth: A look at the JASON project in Philadelphia", discussed the advantages of using inquiry, problem, and project based learning with urban youth. This articled began by discussing the importance of science and technology for the urban youth. Many urban youth are left at a disadvantage because they lack essential resources, their schools are overcrowded, they have a high turn-over rate of teachers, and the ones that stay are ineffective. Study has shown that students eligible for free and reduced lunch had lower scores on their science assessment."
