1,124 words (approx. 4.5 pages) | 8 sources | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper defines type I diabetes as a lifelong metabolic disorder caused by the failure of the human pancreas to produce insulin. The paper emphasizes how post-adolescent patients have unique and specialized needs with respect to their diabetes care during the vulnerable and transitional period after high school. The paper relates, however, that the programs specifically for these emerging diabetic youth have been few and far between. The paper asserts that emerging adults with diabetes need to have a multifaceted program that targets the needs of this especially vulnerable and important population.

From the Paper:

"When hearing the word "diabetes," most people think of the illness that afflicts older adults. However, Type I diabetes, sometimes called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes because people need daily insulin injections of insulin, begins most often in childhood or adolescence. In this form of sudden-onset diabetes, the body produces little or no insulin. It occurs most frequently in individuals descended from Northern European countries, such as Finland, Scotland and Scandinavia, rather than from Southern European countries, the Middle East, or Asia. In the United States, about every three people in 1,000 develop Type I diabetes. More than 1 million Americans live with Type I diabetes, and approximately 13,000 youths are diagnosed every year."
