From the Paper:
"Existence and essence and the relationship between them was an issue among many that were argued about by the thinkers of the middle ages. Giles of Rome's theorem regarding essence and existence was controversial in that many opposed to it. His choosing of the word, res, was, according to many, a mistake. However, it was not completely the cause for opposition."
