Paper Summary:
The purpose of this paper is to bring to light how same-sex couples are being discriminated against and by whom. Also, this paper discusses a brief history of the battle for same-sex marriage and why the fight is so important for the couples and their families.
From the Paper:
"From 1996 to 2004 the fight for marriage equality debate raged on with some states such as Alaska ratifying its state constitution to ban same-sex marriage in 1998, to Vermont recognizing civil unions in 2000, to Massachusetts mandating marriage equality for same-sex couples 2004. Marriage equality was to take a significant blow on February 24, 2004 when President George W. Bush endorsed an amendment to the Constitution of the United States prohibiting marriage between same-sex couples, declaring "The preservation of marriage rises to this level of national importance." The Federal Marriage Amendment was introduced March 2004."
