The topics are focused on are the aftermath of the passing of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and how it affected prison management. The paper also discusses how Native American spirituality within prison walls has become a hot issue as well as the religious practices of the Black Muslim faith behind bars. From the Paper:
"The next piece of literature has the same theme but instead of discussing the hands-off doctrine it discusses the Religions Freedom Restoration Act and how it relates to various religions behind bars. Rudolph Alexander Jr. (1998) discusses the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in great detail and the underlying issues that accompany it in the article "The Impact of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act on Prisons." The (RFRA) was passed by Congress in 1993 aiming at preventing laws which burdened a person's free exercise of religion. Numerous correctional officers and prison officials lobbied Congress to not extend the act to prison systems because it would only cause complications. Despite protests Congress included prisons in the RFRA. The laws surrounding religious freedoms in prison are discussed along with the different cases involving freedom of religion. In addition, the author looks into the impact of the RFRA on prison management and security. "
