"When confronted with the task of motivating a sales staff, the company should let the sales staff know what his or her sales quota is for the month and year (#1 - effort will yield acceptable performance); companies should let sales people know what he or she will receive as a reward for meeting these monthly and yearly sales goals (#2 - performance will be rewarded); companies should put special reward programs into place for exceptional performance from sales people that exceed expectations on a regular basis for their monthly and yearly sales quotas (#3 - the value of the reward is highly positive). Sales people are highly competitive and management must realize that employees in this area are goal oriented as well as competitive."
