Eating Disorders
An overview of the types, causes and treatment of eating disorders.
1,757 words (approx. 7 pages) | 9 sources | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how women and men both are constantly being bombarded with "the ideal" person everywhere they turn, whether it is on TV, in a magazine, or any billboard lining the streets and how this is one of a variety of reasons that have contributed to an increase in the development of eating disorders. It looks at how multiple factors, such as societal, familial and personal characteristics combine to make humans, most specifically adolescents, susceptible to eating disorders. It also examines how adolescents are most affected by these societal influences, as they are at an age where they are trying to form their own identity and are especially succeptible to peer pressures as they are trying to fit in and be liked.

From the Paper:

"Unfortunately many teenage girls already suffer from eating disorders and it is too late for prevention. The treatment of eating disorders, once they are in full effect, is a slow and difficult process, which sometimes results in hospitalization. A mental health professional that is familiar with treating patients with this disorder is necessary to begin psychotherapy and behavior modification. Patients require nutritional and medical intervention in order to make dietary recommendations, ensure weight gain and correct any medical complications (2007.). Eating disorders can sometimes be a more difficult problem to overcome than drug addictions. Unlike drugs, which you can quit remove yourself from all temptations; food is something everyone needs to survive. Food is a vital part of life that can not be escaped. This can make the treatment process very difficult."
