"These past few decades have expanded the public's perception of this disease as well as the medical community's. Through all the research done about drug addiction and how it affects the brain, one can see why this is considered a brain disease. Hopefully if many of the misconceptions go away, then we can take a look at this disease for what it is: a progressive, life threatening brain disease. If we as a society ever hope to make any real progress in dealing with drug problems, then we are going to have to come together in education and understanding for this disease and for those suffering from it so we can find new and better ways of treatment and prevention."
