Paper Summary:
This paper briefly examines how Cuban Americans form a unique group within the Hispanic community and how they differ from people with origins in other parts of Latin America due to their conservatism, their higher rates of education, wealth, and social status. The paper examines how they face discrimination compared to their other Latin American counterparts for these reasons and because of their racial backgrounds, language, and national origin.
From the Paper:
"Another important issue in the discrimination against Cuban-Americans is their economic situation. While it seems at first as though Cuban-Americans have good salaries and employment, with statistically "55% of US born CA [Cuban Americans] had...incomes over 30K vs. 44% of Anglos" (Princeton, 2007), in fact, Cuban-Americans still make significantly less than the Anglo population, with Anglos generally earning 13,000 per capita, and Hispanics earning around 11,000. Most reports on Cubans consider them to be generally well-off and motivated: this may simply be a perception of their earnings, rather than a true analysis of their poverty or lack thereof, the first example of discrimination, similar to the Anti-Semitic belief that all Jewish people are wealthy.
