Cloning
An examination of the American government's stand on cloning.
2,541 words (approx. 10.2 pages) | 10 sources | MLA | 2005

Paper Summary:

This essay explains the arguments over cloning or genetic engineering in any form. In an effort to be as unbiased as possible, both sides are represented within this text in what should be said as being a fair manner. The main emphasis of this essay ,though, is not to argue a point, but to clearly show the government's current stand on the issue at hand and to clarify exactly what cloning is.

From the Paper:

"Cloning is a method that involves the production of a group of identical cells or organisms that all derive from a single individual. In other words, cloning is the method of producing a baby that has the same genes as its parent. For example, take an egg and remove its nucleus, which contains the DNA/genes. Then take the DNA from an adult cell and insert it into the egg, either by fusing the adult cell with the enucleated egg, or by a sophisticated nuclear transfer, then stimulate the reconstructed egg electrically or chemically and try to make it start to divide and become an embryo. Next use the same process to implant the egg into a surrogate mother. To use a specific definition, the American Medical Association (AMA) defined cloning as "the production of genetically identical organisms via somatic cell nuclear transfer". There are two possible ways to clone humans. The first way involves splitting an embryo into several halves and creating many new individuals from that embryo. The second method, stated in the AMA definition and also known as somatic cell nuclear transfer, is a process in which the nucleus of a somatic cell of an existing organism is transferred into an ocyte from which the nucleus has been removed."
