"The black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapilla) is considered to be one of the most common residents of North America. Known for a "cheerful" demeanor through very harsh winter conditions, many admire the small bird for their perceived outlook. At only five or six inches, this diminutive species has a short bill, black cap and bill, and white cheeks. The underbelly is often grey and they can quickly re-grow lost feathers. With a wingspan of only 6-8 inches, it weighs in at around 9-14 grams. The sexes and age groups look the same in this bird and they often benefit from food and houses provided by human admirers.
