Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the prevalent problem of bullying, its relationship to children's increased exposure to violent images, and the magnitude of suffering it can cause in children. The writer explains what constitutes bullying and discusses its causes and effects, as well as summarizing recent research on the subject. Different forms of bullying are discussed, including sexual harassment in schools, and prevention and intervention strategies. The paper concludes that this is an issue that needs to be addressed at school, home and community levels to let bullies know that it will not be tolerated. This paper contains an annotated bibliography.
From the Paper:
"In 2001, psychologist Tonja Nansel et al (2001) did a study that involved more than 15,000 U.S. students in grades six through 10. She found that 17 percent of students said that they had been bullied "sometimes" or more during the school year. 19 percent said that they bullied others "sometimes" or more often and six percent said that they had both been a bully and been bullied themselves. In her study, Nansel reported that there are clearly a larger number of boys who bully others and a significant percentage of girls - 50% - who say that they have been bullied by boys. Nansel points out in her study that while boys may use more physical means to bully someone, girls, in general, use subtler ways to hurt another girl - such as exclusion from a group, spreading rumors, and manipulation of friendships. Nansel notes that this type of harassment can be just as damaging as physical bullying."
