Benjamin Franklin

Paper Summary:

Benjamin Franklin was a man of numerous talents and is well known as a revolutionary scientist, philosopher, inventor, politician, businessman, diplomat and a bestselling author. This paper discusses how, as an author, Franklin is popular for his diversity in interests and his curiosity. It also looks at how his works have ranged from issues dealing with the American Indians to slavery.

"Benjamin Franklin was also a major component in the construction of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence, completed in 1776, declared the thirteen colonies independent of Great Britain. Franklin was appointed by the Continental Congress to a committee responsible for drafting a formal document to justify the colonies' decision of discontinuing political ties with Britain. Thomas Jefferson, a political philosopher, was responsible for writing the first draft. Although Franklin was a member of the committee directed to prepare a declaration of independence, he changed only a few minor words in Jefferson's draft. (Fleming 274). Still, by this time, Franklin's popularity had already soared through the roof."
