Paper Summary:
This paper examines Ballarpur Industry Limited (BILT), the largest paper manufacturer in India, in terms of Porter's demand conditions. It describes Porter's four conditions and discusses how they are designed to explain the operation of firms in national markets competing internationally because of globalization. It particularly focuses on the paper demand in India.
From the Paper:
"In fact, this already seems to be occurring. Paper manufacturers throughout India almost without fail increased the price of paper over the summer of 2006. In June and July paper prices increased by 100% in some cases (Strong demand, 2006). This powerful call for more paper on the national market is part of the impetus for the reorganizing principle at BILT that has the company scrambling to redouble its efforts on paper manufacturing. When examined in light of Porter's demand conditions, it would seem that BILT has a strong competitive advantage in the Indian national market. Limited product segmentation, favorable consumer characteristics, and an anticipatory market combine to create an ideal competitive environmental for the largest paper manufacturer in India. If BILT can continue to exploit this advantage it will secure a strong economic future."
