These programs aim to change the course of the syndrome, so as to greatly reduce the amount of disability the individual suffers. This is particularly important in the long term, as children with autism grow into adults with autism - and without significant reductions in the levels of their disability, many of them will be unable to manage their lives in the way that most adults are able to do. (Rogers, 1998)"
