1,934 words (approx. 7.7 pages) | 11 sources | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers are a vulnerable population that is increasing in numbers worldwide and how they have significant vulnerability related to both health and social problems. It looks at how they deal with increasing deficits in care as the disease progresses and how local outreach, healthcare and support groups can provide the Alzheimer's patient and his or her family with tools and strategies to cope with the disease.

Summary

From the Paper:

"The largest deficit for the Alzheimer's patient is self-care. The Alzheimer's patient is unable to care for his or hers own safety, nutritional needs, hygiene, and other activities of daily living; Alzheimer's patients have a decreasing ability to care for themselves. Once full-functioning adults, Alzheimer's patients now face progressive self-care deficits until they are completely dependent on others for care. Dorothy Orem lists eight Universal Self-Care Requisites; air, water, food, elimination, activity and rest, solitude and social interaction, prevention of hazards and normalcy."

I received my AS in nursing at a local community college before continuing on to get my BSN. My BSN degree is through UOP. Having been an on-line student I can relate to the challenges of writing a paper every week. Sometimes you just need a hand. Here is your hand.
