"Now that I have provided you a basic understanding of what alternative sentencing is, let's look at the different sentencing options available to judges under such a program. One option is modeled in Allegany County Maryland and it involves the use of work crews. "The Alternative Sentencing Work Crew is virtually limitless in the work they perform. Over the past few years, the work crew has been instrumental in assisting with the cleanup efforts after natural disasters .... placed nearly 1,000 new street signs throughout the county ... painted schools and other public buildings" (http://www.asco.allconet.org/, 2006). The same work crews clean up abandoned buildings and clear wall graffiti - thereby beautifying the community in which they once acted as thugs."
