The paper looks at the era of slavery and the Civil Rights Movement and shows how the fight for freedom has been at the forefront of the African-American experience. The paper discusses the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his call for freedom and points out that it is essentially changes in perception that have been at the heart of the success of any freedom movement. The paper explains that the changing concepts of freedom over time for African Americans, and for all Americans, have been shaped by varying degrees of intolerance.
From the Paper:
"The history of African Americans is filled with struggles and triumphs that have shaped and reshaped their views on a plethora of subjects, one of the most notable being the concept of freedom. Brought to America against their will with the sole purpose of being sold into slavery, African Americans have struggled with the concept of freedom from the moment they set foot on this continent. From the days of slavery to the era of the civil rights movement to the modern age, the fight for freedom has been at the forefront of the African American experience. Furthermore, it has made a resounding impact on the social, political and economic states of peoples around the globe. As is stated by Kelly and Lewis (2000) "the actions, thoughts, and dreams of African Americans are responsible for some of the most profound economic, political, and cultural developments in the modern West...African American visions of freedom and efforts to realize them not only transformed American politics but inspired uprisings the world over, from South Africa to Tiananmen Square" (p. ix).
