This paper examines how ,since its independence in 1776, the United States has seen a long list of presidential tenures and how, while most of these presidents have sustained the administrative policies, there have been tenures which have been great successes and some others- major disasters for the United States. A critical summary is presented of presidential tenures from Rutherford B. Hayes (1877) to President George W. Bush (2009). The discussion carried out only features some of the monumental aspects of this tenure in the history of United States and the rest of the world.

"President Grover Cleveland emerged the First Democrat president after the Civil War in 1885("Presidents", 2009). He returned in 1893 for another 4 year term. His first tenure was besotted with controversies including blunt treatment of railroad strikers. He ordered several thousand acres of rail road land to be returned. This angered a many Americans. His foreign policy interference was not appreciated, since he adamantly forced Great Britain to make peace over a boundary settlement issue Venezuela. But his policies during the depression were generally unpopular. The only salient feature of his tenure was his support for Civil war veterans and the pension scheme that he vigilantly followed. In the interim, President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893), a Republican was faced was the tariff issue, which had created surplus in the Treasury, which was hurting business at a lower level. "
