:The purpose of this research is to examine various religious views on the issue of abortion. The plan of the research will be to set forth the social and cultural context in which the debate on abortion is taking place in the modern period, and then to discuss the positions that various church organizations have taken on the issue since the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. As appropriate, reference will be made to shifts in position that have been discernible from church groups.


The 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade has had profound influence on the development of the social and cultural scene in the United States. That decision affirmed the right of women to an elective abortion under many circumstances, until the final weeks of a nine-month pregnancy.
