↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses and reviews various articles and literary pieces in which patients, caregivers and family discuss their feelings, challenges and experiences in dealing with HIV and AIDS. It concludes with the idea that even if we don't always know exactly how to help, showing love and being willing to accept it in return can never be wrong.

From the Paper:

"Caregiving is not an easy task. In their article "The Search for Meaning: Spiritual Issues for HIV Caregivers," Caryn Berman and Carol Reese discuss how caregivers cope with the difficulties and challenges of their job. They explain, "Like the patients, caregivers are transformed as they live with death and wonder" (Quartano). When we read "The Gift of Sweat," we don't know how the narrator's transformation will end, but it is clear that she will be changed and affected by her role in helping Rick in the last part of his life. Without a doubt, she cares about him. Without a doubt, too, she often feels inadequate and wonders how she can help him. She can't keep him from dying, but she can try to help him by keeping his apartment clean, amusing him with little jokes, bringing treats, and lying down with her body next to his. She does not let fear paralyze her, and in her treatment of Rick, she shows the humanity in us all."
