"While not all SMEs grow to become "gazelles," the creation of a small company by entrepreneurs may represent the best opportunity an individual will ever have in achieving financial independence and self-actualization (Bannock). The study of entrepreneurship and how it can contribute to the growth of SMEs also represents a timely endeavor because these businesses serve wider social purposes that remain understudied in the literature. These wider social purposes include, for instance, small companies that recycle local expenditure and savings into communities in ways that larger businesses are unable to match or by improving citizen safety on city streets at night, thereby helping to reduce crime (Bannock)."
