"IntroductionAccording to Abadinsky (1989), chemical dependency/substance abuse accounts for approximately 18 percent of health-care costs in America. The hospital environment is not immune to this problem. Lewy (1991) reports that most large hospitals either have or are planning chemical dependence treatment programs for their employees. The project proposed here is the development of a program aimed at identifying and treating nurses who are chemically dependent. The program will be implemented in a psychiatric hospital setting.
