"Several researchers (Johnson & O'Neil, 1989; McClellan, 1985; Masi, 1984) concur that the incidence of alcoholism that occurs within the private and public sectors fails to have consensus. The crux of this dissensus revolves around the difficulty of consensual agreement on the definition of alcoholism and the accurate identification of alcoholics. Johnson and O'Neil (1989, p. 67) report that the incidence of alcoholism in the American work-place is most probably reflective of that incidence occurring in society. That is, "Estimates of the percentage of the American workforce which suffers from alcohol addiction and emotional problems vary widely, but 20% is an often cited figure" (p. 67). In contrast, the National Council on Alcoholism (1986, p. 1) reports that six to 10% of all workers are alcoholic. Given the acceptance of this incidence of..."
