↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper presents a research proposal to identify the current incidence of alcohol use in the U.K. and discover best practices to address this problem. The hypothesis of the proposed study is that individuals who use alcohol in the workplace will experience higher rates of on-the-job injuries, lost time at work, and sexually transmitted diseases than those that do not use alcohol. The paper includes the methodology for a mixed qualitative and survey research design and the selection of participants from the health care profession.

From the Paper:

"Workplace settings can be stressful in a number of ways that can contribute to the use of alcohol and drugs. In highly stressful settings, workers may seek to reduce stress through the use of alcohol and/or drugs. Conversely, alcohol and drug use can become more pronounced even when an insufficient amount of stress is involved. For instance, a study on British Rail determined that the major causation of fully 88 per cent of signals passed at danger (SPAD), a potentially dangerous incident in which a train passes a red signal without stopping, was driver error that was attributable in part to alcohol use because of the low arousal qualities of these jobs."
