A review of the historical role of women within Islam.
801 words (approx. 3.2 pages) | 2 sources | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper presents a brief history of how women have been depicted in the religion of Islam. It discusses how the stereotypes of the Islamic religion have persisted over time, as have the stereotypes of women within Islam. The paper analyzes the vital role that women in Islam play. It concludes that as time continues and societies change, there will always be teachings that need to be either revised or reexamined in order to reflect the knowledge of the time.

From the Paper:

"The religion of Islam is one that has been misunderstood and generalized for quite some time. Just as the resulting stereotypes of the religion have persisted, so have the stereotypes of women, particularly women of the Islamic faith. With any religion there must be a clear distinction made between the actual teachings of a religion and the diverse cultures through which it is practiced, which may or may not be consistent with them. While the stereotype persists that these women are mysterious because of the way that they dress, or that they are completely helpless when it comes to their significant other, it's an overgeneralization and one that is unfair categorically. While it is true that Islam is a religion that is very conservative and, therefore consists of conservative rules the women who belong to that faith are important. Women of Muslim faith serve a vital role as they participate in their religion and that biggest of roles, is that of caretaker of the family."
