Paper Summary:

This essay examines the uneven distribution of wealth in the United States today, and the resulting rise in poverty. The author looks at why this problem continues to grow and what is or is not being done to solve this issue, including the need for better education in lower income communities.

From the Paper:

"As the United States of America enters into the new millennium, it brings with it not only the technological advances of today's society, but the economic shortcomings of our nation as well. In a country where you can become a millionaire in an instant by winning the lottery or over time by developing a large-scale company such as Microsoft, it is hard to imagine forty percent of America's children are growing up in poverty. Unfortunately, this figure is reality. The number of families living in poverty today is far greater than it was thirty years ago. The main reason for poverty in America is due to the uneven distribution of income between groups of people, and although this problem cannot be solved immediately, it can be improved over time."
