5,811 words (approx. 23.2 pages) | 21 sources | MLA | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

This research paper discusses whether opportunities existed to end the Vietnam War, the reasons for the failure of various peace initiatives and the implications for the avoidance of future conflicts. The paper begins with a brief introduction, followed by a history of the Indochina conflict preceding America's involvement in the 1960s and onwards. The writer then looks at the initial introduction of communism into the area, in the 1950s and the political considerations in the United States that led them to war. Finally, the paper offers a review of the peace initiatives that were raised and those which were actually implemented eventually.

From the Paper:

"The primary reason why negotiations between France and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) in 1946 failed to prevent the outbreak of war was the inability of the French to accommodate to the new realities in post-war Indochina. Until the French arrived in force in the mid-19th century, the Vietnamese had a long history of resistance to foreign invaders, the Chinese, who ruled them, except for short intervals, between 111 B.C. and 939 A.D.
