This paper examines the history of abortion from an American perspective. The paper looks at its earliest days in the republic, through to its vilification in the latter part of the nineteenth century, through to its present situation. The paper also examines the pros and cons of the issue and assesses their relative merits. Finally the paper concludes by looking briefly at what the future may hold if Roe v. Wade is overturned by a conservative Supreme Court.

"It is entirely possible that no social issue of the past thirty-two years has galvanized, goaded and outraged as many Americans as the ongoing issue of abortion. The following paper will examine the abortion issue by tracing its history in America from the nineteenth century to the present day. In addition, this paper will take a close look at the pro-choice and pro-life sides of the debate and assess the relative merits of each. Finally, and not least of all, some time will be devoted to discussing the ramifications of Justice Sandra Day O'Connors retirement upon the tenor of the abortion debate and upon the future of abortion itself. "
