Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the reasons for and history behind the Mexican and Latin American peoples' migration to the United States. The paper examines many of the factors in these Latin American countries, such as lack of education and job opportunities, which lead to the migration of these peoples to the United States. The paper then analyzes the impact of these cultures on ours. The paper is divided into three sections, the first on Mexico and the rest on the continental Latin American countries, one section on Puerto Ricans, and one section on Cubans.
From the Paper:
"The Cubans began to come to the United States, as Marisa (1994) recanted, as exiles because of the 1959 revolution in Cuba (p. 35). Hernandez (1994) contended that Cuba was a scapegoat for the cold war between America and Russia, and that after the Cuban Revolution, a large portion of the refugees of the privileged classes were able to escape from the social revolution that they strongly opposed (p. 27). These Hispanics were able to gain success in the United States in small businesses, and in other jobs that maintained a considerable amount of success. Because of this opportunistic advantage, Cubans became models of success for other Hispanic immigrates. But later on, after the initial influx of the more privileged class of Cubans, other Cuban refugees with less experience and economic advantages arrived, and these Cubans came to live in lifestyles that were more aligned with the Hispanics seeking social mobility and the American dream."
