Paper Summary:
The concept of justice has been debated and argued, defined and redefined, molded and reshaped time and again. This paper attempts to show through an analysis of various readings from ancient Greece by authors such as Pericles and Homer, that there are many different interpretations of justice along with an evolving definition of it.
From the Paper:
"In Pericles' Funeral Speech, conduct of justice is completely patriotic. He calls upon the people of Athens to be one minded in their pursuit of citizenship and a perfect state. Since the circumstances under which he is delivering the speech, a eulogy for hundreds of killed Athenian soldiers, are less than favorable, Pericles fronts the address with shameless nationalism. He tells the citizens of the characteristics that separate Athens from other countries. Such as, each Athenian, regardless of his social standing, has equal say in social issues as long as he remains useful, "when it is a question of putting on person before another...what counts is not membership of a particular class, but the actual ability which the man possesses." Furthermore, an Athenian citizen, in his quest for justice, should be not only willing but happy to die for his country. "
