This paper discusses the role of the Catholic church in the ideological drama of the Spanish Civil War. The author explains that at the same time that the Church became the most visible symbol of the regressive elements of Spanish tradition for verbal and physical attack by the Republicans, it also became, on the Nationalist side, a more than willing mouthpiece of the uprising, its leaders, and Nationalist political goals. The author discusses three major factors that contributed to the Church's alliance with the Nationalist cause, giving examples of all three, and concludes that it was the simplification of the situation into two radically opposing sides that ensured that the only possible victory would be one of complete military dominance.

"The Catholic religion was a major character in the narratives of both camps. For Republicans, the Church was an instrument of the wealthy and the powerful. Devotion to the myths and rituals of the religion prevented the development of a completely liberated, modern, and rational way of life. The clergy were seen as manipulators who became rich and influential by living off the labor of others while indoctrinating the working class to accept oppressive social structures and superstitious escapist beliefs. The Nationalists touted Catholicism as the Spanish way of life. The values of family, brotherly love, and obedience to the traditional power structures of parents, elders, and the state which Catholicism taught were seen as identical to the values of a traditionalist Spain."
