This paper reviews the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997, thought to have marked a dramatic end to a period of unprecedented economic growth among newly industrializing nations of East Asia. Analysis of the crisis indicates that the revelation of its origins in the hidden and often corrupt relationships between government banks and enterprises of many of these economies has fostered a lack of confidence in the health and transparency of these economies.
