This paper reports on the Text Retrieval Conference (TREC) Genomics Track and recent research on databases and accessing databases on genome information, which intends to improve information retrieval in the area of genomics by creating test collections that will allow researchers to improve and better understand failures of their systems, and which shows several types of research in the most recent papers on the subject.

"Genomics research on a large scale can be traced to and has been much bolstered by the Human Genome Program supported by the Department of Energy and other government agencies starting in 1986, with the purpose of mapping the complete DNA sequence of the human genome. Subsequent research addresses specific purposes for different parts of the human genome, ways in which genetic data can be used to fight and prevent disease, traits associated with different genomic sequences, ways of altering genetic information, and much more related to the basic data from the Human Genome Project."
