Unlike the media in other countries such as the United States where advertising supports the majority of programming, advertising is only allowed on one television station in Sweden today. "Sweden enjoys a 1,000-year-long continuous history as a sovereign state; however, the country's territorial holdings continued to change frequently until 1809 (Weibull 1) The permanent capital of the country has been Stockholm since 1523 (Weibull 2). According to this author, "Historically Sweden rose from backwardness and poverty into a highly developed postindustrial society and advanced welfare state with a standard of living and life expectancy that rank among the highest in the world" (Weibull 2). Analysts from the U.S. government report that, "A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars" (Sweden 2)."
