2,499 words (approx. 10 pages) | 11 sources | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses how contemporary media shapes and alters our sense of where we as individuals fit in to a larger social network. The paper looks at the media's shaping of socioeconomic status and ethnicity, their role in creating a sense of trust and offering honest reporting as well as their developing of the social reality of the "green" environmentalism movement. The paper emphasizes that media shapes our perception of social reality to such a degree that in many cultures it is the only representation we have.

From the Paper:

"Social reality is a construct of social interaction and observations. Individuals seek to understand and interpret environment via cues that establish a standard set of ideas about any given subject matter or even overall feelings about issues such as health, safety, success, intelligence or even to help an individual choose how he or she will contribute to civic society. The contemporary media is probably the most influential shaper of social reality in the modern world, as it offers massive amounts of information, albeit in short quips, to individuals seeking understanding that encompasses more than the immediate social surrounding, of family, work and or school."
