Sight Vocabulary
An overview of the definition and efficiency of the sight vocabulary method of teaching reading.
4,560 words (approx. 18.2 pages) | 12 sources | APA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how sight vocabulary is a growing concept that has teachers going away from teaching students to sound words out and beginning to teach them to memorize the layout of a work so that they can identify it immediately. The paper also examines how it remains to be seen how effective this will be, since this is the first generation that has used this method exclusively and more research is necessary in order to come to a conclusion of the effectiveness of it. The paper contends that if effective, the sight vocabulary concept could increase the literacy rate in many different countries through the world in the future.

From the Paper:

"Despite the results that have occurred with this process, there remains a knowledge gap in studies of sight vocabulary. It is not completely known what factors can be attributed to picking up this knowledge and also what factors make acquisition of these words into the sight vocabulary more difficult. One factor might be whether or not the student is learning English as a second language, since different words can be held in different contexts, depending on the language. There are various things that affect how well be pick up words through simply reading them repeatedly. The problems with this sort of teaching is that certain individuals pick up on things at different rates than others, so those who have very good word recognition skills will pick up on words at a faster pace which will, in turn, make them more proficient readers.
