Sexual Harassment
A review of the problem of sexual harassment in Texas prisons.
4,363 words (approx. 17.5 pages) | 3 sources | APA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses the problem of sexual harassment that we still face as a society and must effectively address. More specifically, the paper discusses how sexual harassment in prison systems deserves a closer examination because of its current magnitude, given that inmates have been stripped of most of their basic human rights and are supposed to be under close supervision. The paper further discusses that an inmate's security and personal safety depends on the correctional officers that run their facilities. The paper sees this as a huge issue because these inmates have already been punished, justly, by our criminal justice system and this did not include having their security and other essential needs neglected by prison officials because they choose to institutionalize such negligence. Therefore, this paper consists of an in-depth investigation and analysis into why Texas inmates allege that they are suffering from such injustices. The paper feels that an investigation must be done to stop this abuse from continuing.

From the Paper:

"Those characteristics most associated with victims of sexual abuse are: small physical build; youth, homosexuals, feminine characteristics such as a high pitched voice and long hair; being the racial minority in that prison-being white; first time offenders; lacking street smarts and being shy (including lacking assertion and aggressiveness). Prisoners who show any of these characteristics are most likely to face sexual abuse and be "turned out" (HRW, 2001). Moreover, those that show signs of several of these characteristics are even more likely to be targeted for abuse. No one is safe from being targeted for abuse-sexual abuse in prison because "[i]n the wrong circumstances, it should be emphasized, almost any prisoner may become a victim".

At John Jay College I obtained my AS in Criminal Justice and my BS in Legal Studies. Currently I am at John Jay again to obtain my Masters in Public Administration (MPA). I did well especially in my Majors. My Major GPAs were well above a 3.0. I believe they averaged about 3.6 or so. I am also beginning my Masters in Criminal Justice also at John Jay College where my GPA is currently a 3.9
