Hoping to recapture the ideals of the Victorian Era, women were encouraged to become housewives. The ideal female roles during the 1950s included raising a family and housekeeping. Although many women maintained jobs during this time, the baby boom that began in the 1940s proliferated during the 1950s. In 1945 the Second World War had ended and thousands of men returned home to girlfriends and wives and began to start a family. "
